A total of $16,296.50 was generated for Charity from the 2017-18 Chicago Sun-Times/BPA “Beat the Champions” Contest.  This brings our Beat the Champs total for all charitable causes to $2,872,914.93 since inception of the contest in 1961.  All charity proceeds are awarded to local area charities.  To view a list of the charities, click here.

This year's "Champs" includes 2018 US Open Champion Liz Kuhlkin of Schenectady, New York.  Liz holds the national record for highest three-game series for a woman with an 890 series.  She bowled collegiately for Nebraska, and was a member of the 2013 & 2015 Women's NCAA National Championship team.  She was first team collegiate All-American in 2013, 2014, 2015 and named the 2015 NCAA Division 1 Player of the Year.  Liz won her first PWBA national title in 2015, the PWBA Topeka Open.  She is a 2018 Team USA member, and bowled on Junior Team USA in 2014.

Our Men's "Champ," Rhino Page, won the 2017 US Open by defeating Jakob Butturff in title match 256-222 for his first major and sixth career title.  The Orlando, Florida resident won the 2018 Best Bowler ESPY award, was the PBA Rookie of the Year in 2007-08 and won the PBA's George Young High Average Award in 2015 with a 227.14 average.  The lefthander bowled for the University of Kansas where he was a member of the 2004 Intercollegiate Bowling Championship winning team and was named 2004 Intercollegiate Bowling Championship MVP.  He was a member of Team USA from 2004-10 and was a member of Junior Team USA in 2001 and ’02.  Rhino has 15 PBA 300 games and has career earnings of over $686,000.  He currently serves as an Athlete representative on the USBC Board of Directors.

The Chicago Sun-Time/BPA Target Score Show will air on NBC Sports Chicago on the following dates/times:

Tuesday, Christmas Day, Dec 25 - 11 AM
Wednesday, Dec 26 - 4 PM & 10 PM
Saturday, December 29 - 6 PM
Sunday, December 30 - 12 PM Noon



 

In last year's Tournament, the 2018 grand prizes of $7,500 went to the Men’s Division Champion Joseph Bowers from Lynwood Lanes, Lynwood, and the Women’s Division Champion Vicki Hobsheid from Wood Dale Bowl, Wood Dale. Vicki became the first bowler to win the Finals mutiple times - she won her first championship in 2015.   In addition, Vicki's league received a $500 bonus to add to their Prize Funds by virtue of  her bowling in a 100% entry participating league.

Congratulations to Men's Champion Joseph Diaz from AMF Forest Lanes and Women's Champion Stephanie Thompson of Brunsick Zone River Grove Bowl - they each received a first place prize of $7,500!  Both of our Champions qualified in leagues that partcipated with 100% of the member's entering - Stephanie's TNT League and Joe's Latin American Mixed will each receive a "100% League Bonus" contribution of $500 to their league's prize fund.

Both of this year's "Champs" hail from Cheektowaga, NY and are recent US Open Champions in addition to their many national titles.
No stranger to the Beat the Champs show, Liz Johnson won her third consecutive and fifth overall Open title.  Ryan Ciminelli won the 2015 US Open, his first major title, and recently won the PBA Xtra Frame Parkside Lanes Open in Aurora IL.  Liz and Ryan will roll the women's and men's three-game series target scores, respectively.
PWBA and WIBC titlist Jan Schmidt and 2012 USBC Queens Champion and Chicago's own Diandra Asbaty will call the action.

This year's "Champs" include Chicago's own Liz Johnson, now living in Palatine, who set last year's Women's Target Score.  Liz earned her third consecutive PWBA Player of the Year award this year and won her fourth consecutive and sixth overall U.S. Women's Open title in 2017.  On Nov. 18, Johnson won the Professional Bowlers Association Chameleon Championship at the National Bowling Stadium to become the second woman to win a PBA Tour title.

Our Men's "Champ," Francois Lavoie, rolled a 300 game in the TV Finals and ultimately won the 2016 U.S. Open.  Lavoie hails from Quebec City, Quebec and is a graduate of Wichita State University.  He has won two additional PBA titles since his US Open victory, and is a four-time member of Team Canada.

The 57th Annual Chicago Sun-Times/BPA Beat the Champs Target Scores were bowled at Elk Grove Bowl.
This year's target scores series is 623 for Women (set by Liz Johnson)
and 770 for Men (set by Francois Lavoie).
